Better spring blooms start with proper fertilizing in the fall and the spring! Some gardeners only apply fertilizer in the spring, but I recommend applying it a month or so before your first hard freezes to improve your spring bloom.

~~ Two questions are often asked. First, what if I get it on any rhizomes showing above ground? Regular fertilizer sowing will not hurt the plant; just do not put a huge handful on top of the rhizomes. The second question is whether the soil must be dry to apply. You can apply it in any weather conditions. We often use it after rain and occasionally in snow. Any moisture around the plants will begin to break the fertilizer down.
